Message from the Chief - July 2019

On behalf of the Northfield Volunteer Fire Company, thank you for your interest in our webpage.  I am thankful to serve the Village of Northfield and the Town of Litchfield as Chief, and I look forward to the challenges that come with leading such a great organization.

We had a very successful year thanks to the amazing efforts of our Officers, Members and Mutual Aid companies. One of the largest accomplishments in the last 12 months was the transformation of our mutual aid plan. We now respond to more emergencies with Bantam, East Litchfield, Litchfield and Thomaston Fire Companies, and they provide us the same assistance in return. The reason we started doing this is primarily due to a need for manpower, especially during the busy workday. With two or three companies responding, we have a lot more resources at our disposal and can get the job done quicker.  The mutual aid plan has built stronger relationships and friendships with our fellow brothers and sisters in the fire service. We continue to train with each other and work together to better ourselves for when the bell rings.

This year, our big goal is increasing membership. Northfield has almost 40 dedicated members, but we have the same challenges most people do when it comes to balancing jobs, families, and personal commitments. We are always looking for additional volunteers to join our family. We have gained a great deal of firefighters in the past year, but we are also in need of EMS staff and fire police. We are hoping to get some new volunteers and to run an EMR (Emergency Medical Responder) course in the near future.  If you are reading this and you’re interested in learning more, please stop down on a Monday or Wednesday night or when you see us working at the firehouse. We can start with a tour and go from there. You can also contact us via email or on our Facebook page. We keep it updated on a regular basis so that our residents can always stay informed and engaged.

Moving forward, I am happy to answer any questions or help with any issues that you may have.  Please never be hesitant about calling us. Whether its 3:00 in the morning or your horse is missing, our firefighters and medical personnel will be there for our friends and neighbors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Simply because ... that’s what we do.

Sincerely,

Chief Ryan Crichton
